Buying time in Khao Lak

Khao Lak

Strangely enough, we ended up spending 4 nights in Khao Lak after our trip on the Oktavia, partly to recuperate, but mostly because we needed to spend some quality time on the interwebs planning the next leg of our trip. The town offers a nice alternative to its seedier neighbor of Phuket, but we honestly didn’t get out much with the rain and our laundry list of to-dos.

  • The Khao Lak Youth Club had a summer-in-the-Hamptons shabby chicness to it that I welcomed after three days of being cooped up in a boat cabin. The self-contained air con bungalows are definitely the way to go, though the hotel falls short outside of the room. The WI-FI really only works in the lobby and breakfast is questionable. The staff is mostly unhelpful, though the lady at  Asia Tours down the street is great.
  • Tiffy’s, located right next door, offered fixings in equal parts Thai and German of excellent quality. We experimented with going budget on PB&Js for a short time in Khao Lak
  • We didn’t venture out of our hotel room much while we were in Khao Lak, but from what I could tell, the beaches were just as nice, if not nicer, than those in Phuket.
